So you would like to get in to the christian film industry. As a newbie in this industry, I will try to help you here as much as I can. I have been in the faith film industry 17 months now as to this writing. My some odd 30 years in radio broadcasting played a big part of me getting here. As the internet evolved, internet platforms for radio broadcasting came to light. In 2011, I started my own internet radio broadcasting station that also had a platform for video broadcasting. So I wanted to do as much as I could in bringing the word of God to the world, with the tools I had before me. As for the live or recorded side of the video station, I wanted to video tape short stories for broadcast. But I wondered how? This was the question. I new radio, but not so much on the video side. I needed to know, what right camera equipment to obtain, how to use it, how to film on set, ect... So I thought about this. I decided to turn to some professionals in the business and contact someone for guidance. I ended up getting more than I bargained for. Through research, I ended up with the production files from Sherwood Pictures, the folks who had made the movies "Flywheel" "Facing The Giants" and "Fireproof."
Inside was an huge bank of information. I had read somewhere in an online article put out by Alex Kendrick of Sherwood Pictures, that they had brought in some outside production help for their movies. The question was "who?" The answer was in the files. But I first had to have a story. So again I went on line to find out some of the steps on story telling. I found it in Wiki how. The next step was of great importance, prayer. What did God want me to write about? When the answer came, I wrote the story, that was actually known as a treatment. I thought it was what was known as a premise. But, with 19 pages in hand I proceeded to contact DNP studios. I really wasn't looking to make a motion picture, just a fifteen or twenty minute film for the video station. I sent a "Can you help" email to DNP studios. In less than five minutes, I had received an email from the owner wanting me to call him. I was not at home, but I got an email off to him saying I would call him as soon as I got back home shortly. When I arrived home fifteen minutes latter I discovered He had already called me. After about an hour on the phone, he ask me to send him my write up. I did. two days latter I called him back, and he told me he wanted to make this in to a featured film.
Wow, could it really be? That was the starting point in to the motion picture business for me. May 2012 was when I wrote the story and it was in the hands of David Nixon by the end of June. Today I have two movies that Mr. Nixon is assisting me with to get them to the silver screen. I was not looking to get in to the motion picture industry. I did not have a burden for it nor had I prayed to be in it in anyway shape or form. But God did. So here I am. Sense then, I have had an unbelievable amount of emails from people wanting to know how I got to where I am. I can only say that it has been all God. I have been in contact with many many christian actors/actresses and production people and it has been overwhelming. I have learned so much in the last 17 months.
Can anyone get in to faith movies?
No. It's just not that easy. Not even for the christian movie industry. I have seen and heard of so many people try and fail. I still have not got my first film out yet, and have some make it or break it hurdles to get over. Although, I was blessed to be able to get in with the right people. Believe me, I was blessed to be able to have David Nixon on my side as a teacher and mentor. Not only on one film, but two now. David is not the kind of business person you just call up and your in. You really have to have something good to work with to have him say, I think you have a movie here. David is very strict and very professional. I have seen and heard from many people asking how to get in motion pictures. First of all, "IT MUST BE A CALLING." The Christian movie industry is very new. There are not very many christian production companies out there. All of them are independent as far as I know. There maybe 6 or 7 well known production companies out there now. There are many that are trying to get there. One of the best ways to find a christian/faith production company, is to go search Imdb. Anyone who is anyone can more that likely be found there. If you have some kind of talent or gift (skill) that a motion picture company uses, Email them and ask how you submit a resume to them. If you are looking to get in to the faith/christian motion picture business, and want to learn a lot more about it, the you can now get the same production files I have from Sherwood Pictures. But be warned, making featured films is very expensive and usually takes two years to get in to a theater. Each step is time consuming and some can take months if done right. The legalities can be cumbersome and necessary for protection. You will spend hours upon hours getting things done. There is some good news however. Once you have your first film in a theater or dvd, the other films you do is pretty much smooth sailing. Another good thing to remember is that everyone in this business, knows everyone in this business.
There is no guarantee that you will be able to get in to motion pictures whatever it maybe your looking for. The best thing is to contact the production companies, be polite, be ready, and be prayed up. Expect to not get anything right off. If you end up getting to sweep the floors of the production set or studio as a job, YOUR IN!
